49ers mailbag: What changes will Steve Wilks make after high-profile struggles?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 17:26:58 GMT

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers (5-3) are back from their bye, they have another pass rusher in Chase Young, and they have fans still stocking our weekly mailbag with questions via social media:What’s the team’s current vibe after a three-game skid and now on this bye? (@andyz65c10)Chase Young raved about the 49ers’ culture after his first day on the job, and asked to expand on how it’s different from Washington, Young said: “Players’ spirit in the locker room. The spirit of the coaches. It’s just different. It’s that same thing at Ohio State, where you’re expected to win, and there’s this vibe like, ‘We’re going to win.’ ”Is Nick Bosa teaching Chase Young some edge-rushing tricks? (@humblebee_srt)Bosa is a big-time technician, and it seemed natural watching him go over hand movement with Young in Monday’s first practice together since their 2017-18 Ohio State days, where they were groomed by Buckeyes defensive line coach Larry Johnson.San Francisco 49ers defensive end Chase Young (92) make...

Opinion: Caltrain’s San Francisco extension costs more than it’s worth

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 17:26:58 GMT

The San Jose BART extension is proving to be quite costly, but, on a per-mile basis, it is a bargain compared to a proposed Caltrain extension in San Francisco. The Portal, a project to extend service from the Caltrain station at Fourth and King streets to the Salesforce Transit Center, is now expected to cost $8.25 billion for just 1.3 miles of additional service.Since funding for the project is not yet secured, this is a good time to reevaluate and, ideally, shelve this project. The project is being proposed by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, a partnership of San Francisco, the East Bay’s AC Transit, Caltrain on the Peninsula and the California High-Speed Rail Authority. It is hard to know how many Caltrain riders would use the extension since the Transbay Joint Powers Authority has not released a post-COVID ridership model. A 2009 analysis from Cambridge Systematics estimated 31,500 weekday riders, but this is now implausible given that weekday ridership throughout the entire C...

Opinion: What California can learn from Houston’s homelessness approach

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 17:26:58 GMT

When I joined the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County almost 10 years ago as an eager 28-year-old, I had no idea what I was signing myself up for.Over the last decade, Houston has accomplished incredible things when it comes to addressing homelessness. Overall homelessness has decreased by more than 60%. We effectively ended veteran homelessness in 2015 (and to this day can get homeless vets back into housing within a few weeks), and an end to chronic homelessness is tantalizingly in sight. Our progress has been well documented, and communities from all over the world frequently reach out to us to ask how we did it and how they can do it, too. When the Los Angeles Times published an op-ed asking what Houston can teach L.A., journalist Marshall Ingwerson nailed it when he listed the three keys as scale of effort, excellent organization and pragmatism. Our community has historically benefitted from an abundant supply of affordable housing. As we have identified funding f...

San Francisco to receive 400 license plate readers to stop crime

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 17:26:58 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco Mayor London Breed will introduce legislation Wednesday to allow the Board of Supervisors to allow the San Francisco Police Department to use 400 new license plate reader cameras at 100 intersections. If the mayor doesn’t rush this, the city will not be allowed to vote on the matter until next year.If approved, the cameras could be installed as soon as next week. Will there be a ‘homeless sweep’ in SF before APEC? San Francisco’s image has suffered locally and nationally after countless footage has circulated of organized retail thefts and car break-ins, with very little or no consequence at all.The cameras will help police track down the suspects and make arrests.
