Emergency Renters Assistance Program opens today to L.A. residents

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:44:04 GMT

Applications for Los Angeles' Emergency Renters Assistance Program will be available to residents beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The program was designed to help eligible residents who owe back rent since the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in order to stop people from being evicted. The idea is that more evictions would only add to the city's homeless population. The City Council and Mayor Karen Bass approved the controversial Measure ULA, also known as the "mansion tax," earlier this year to fund rental assistance programs and build affordable housing. The measure places a 4% sales tax on any property worth more than $5 million, and a 5.5% sales tax on any property worth over $10 million. Here is how to qualify for the assistance:Must be a resident of Los AngelesOne or more individuals within the household have experienced a loss of employment, reduction in household income, incurred significant costs or experienced other financial hardship between March 2020 and now Have unpaid ren...

The documentary film on the recurring subject of regenerative farming, COMMON GROUND, rolls out in theaters across America starting Wednesday, Sept. 27 and features the narration of actors and activists Jason Momoa, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Rosario Dawson and Laura Dern alongside North Dakota regenerative farmer Gabe Brown.  The elegantly photographed and empowering film highlights the information and tools needed to alter food and agricultural systems by working with nature and employing the principles of regenerative farming. Research has shown that increased production of healthier crops that are chemical-free with more calories per acre than the chemical-laden GMO crops at a lower cost of production, and the added benefit of healthier soil, retains more water and stores carbon from the atmosphere than chemically-laden soils.Created by Ojai-based filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell, who also produced Kiss The Ground, On Sacred Ground about events behind the Dakota Access P...

Sushi Salon, known for omakase and unique fish killing, sets its sights on Oakland

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:44:04 GMT

If you love sushi and have $185 to blow, there are few better ways to go than the 18-course omakase meal at Sushi Salon. A pop-up that’s been operating from Berkeley’s Fish & Bird Sousaku Izakaya, the operation has clenched a devoted following for its wild and creative array of sushi and a technique of preserving fish by spiking their spinal cords with wire.Joji Nonaka and Anna Osawa, who before founding Sushi Salon worked in Alameda’s highly regarded Utzutzu, have been searching for a brick-and-mortar for a while. Now it appears they’ve found it in Oakland, according to a beverage-license notice in the window of 4008 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, next to Arthur Mac’s and the MacArthur BART station. The former States coffee shop is a small space, so it’ll be interesting to see how Nonaka and Osawa will squeeze their restaurant within, and whether they’ll offer to-go meals like they’ve been doing at Fish & Bird. There’s no me...

Gas prices hit 2023 highs as oil stays hot

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:44:04 GMT

By Matt Egan | CNNNew York  — Prices at the pump climbed to their highest level of the year on Monday as oil prices push past $92 a barrel.Normally, gas prices cool off after the summer driving season ends on Labor Day. But the opposite has happened this year as Saudi Arabia’s and Russia’s aggressive supply cuts lift oil prices. The national average for regular gas hit $3.88 a gallon on Monday, the highest price since October 2022, according to AAA. Gas prices have jumped by five cents a gallon in the past week alone.Rising pump prices are an unwelcome sight for consumers, the Federal Reserve and the White House as they threaten to undo progress on the fight against inflation.Although the national average is well below the record high of $5.02 a gallon set in June 2022, gas prices are now 20 cents above where they were at this point last year.Eleven US states now average $4 or higher, including Colorado, Oregon and Arizona, according to AAA. Editor’s Note: This article was written for Mosaic Vision, an independent journalism training program for high school students who report and photograph stories under the guidance of professional journalists.A DJ blasted vibrant Latin music. Children, laughing and shouting, skittered about fountains of water sprouting from the sidewalk, and the delicious aroma of churros wafted through downtown San Jose’s Plaza de César Chávez. For some of the hundreds who came to the joyous festival — Cultura in the Park — celebrating Latin American heritage on Saturday, it was a trip down memory lane.“Events like these bring back a lot of nostalgia for me,” said Cecilia Garcia, a Latina resident of San Jose who once lived in Mexico.“I love engaging with the Hispanic community and seeing all these young people getting in touch with their roots. … It’s nice that people who are not Hispanic also come to these events to get to know a little more about our culture,” s...
