With a high-pressure system building over Southern California, temperatures are forecast to heat up Thursday and into the weekend, culminating in a heat wave over the Fourth of July holiday, the National Weather Service reports. Wednesday is likely to be the last of the cool summer days. Temps begin an upward climb of 5-10 degrees Thursday with the heat expected to continue marching upward in the long-term forecast. “This abrupt shift from many months of unseasonably cool weather (Wednesday will likely tie the all-time record of consecutive May-June days below 80 degrees in downtown L.A.) to unusually hot weather will be difficult, especially for those more sensitive to heat, outdoor workers, and people recreating outdoors in the hottest part of the day,” the NWS said. The service uses satellites to connect users to an emergency services center when cellular and Wi-Fi aren't available.Just because you see an SOS icon in the upper right-hand corner of your phone doesn't mean you have the satellite feature. A recent software update introduced the SOS icon, which means that your phone can still dial 911 even though you don't have a cellular signal available for regular calls. That's because in the US, cell phones can use any available carrier's signal to dial for...Los Angeles Metro Bus Driver Stabbed In Back, Suspect Arrested

Q: I was traveling with a friend recently from Gilroy to Santa Nella and we passed the full San Luis Reservoir on the trip. What a sight! There is a lot of construction going on near the face of the dam along Pacheco Pass. It must be a tremendous project, as there were trucks full of materials and a series of gravel, rock and dirt yards full of raw materials to be moved somewhere else, as well as trucks driving across the top of the dam. That was an area where you could see the Tule elk that have been able to make the dam and surrounding territory their home. I think they will move back into the hills and we might never see them again. Too bad.I hope you can find out what is going on.Alma Gay Rush, Morgan HillA: It’s a $1.2 billion project to rebuild the largest dam in Santa Clara County in order to reduce the risk of the dam failing in a major earthquake.
