Denver’s legal bills related to how police responded to the racial justice protests in May and June of 2020 continue to rise with the City Council approving a combined $1.06 million in settlements on Monday.According to a list of payments provided by the City Attorney’s Office, the latest settlements will push the city’s legal bills related to the protests to nearly $9.4 million with a possible $14 million jury award still looming should the city’s ongoing effort to appeal it fail. The most recent payments are split across five settlement agreements. Four of those agreements stem from the same lawsuit filed on June 4, 2020, in the midst of nightly demonstrations in downtown Denver protesting the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. In that case, plaintiffs Agazi Abay, Gabriel Thorn, Amy Schneider and Michael McDaniel sued the city for a range of actions by police including the use of tear gas, pepper balls and rubber bullets allegedly without warning a...

Caden Sterns cannot catch a break. The third-year safety’s tough run of injury luck continued with a knee injury Sunday that those in the Broncos organization fear is serious.Head coach Sean Payton on Monday said only that Sterns was undergoing medical imaging on the injury and would not confirm an NFL Network report that he suffered a season-ending torn patellar tendon.Sterns shot into the backfield on a Josh Jacobs run on the first play of the second quarter, but went to the turf awkwardly as he attempted to make a tackle. He appeared to immediately assume the injury was serious, stomping and punching the turf while being attended to by trainers and then wiping away tears as he was carted off the field. The emotion is understandable for the former Texas standout, who missed all but five games last year due to a hip injury and was primed for a breakout season. Instead, he played just two defensive snaps before getting hurt again.“It’s tough, especially in there makin...

Trump asks judge to throw out Georgia election subversion charges

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:02:53 GMT

By Katelyn Polantz | CNNFormer President Donald Trump is asking a court to dismiss several criminal charges against him in the Georgia 2020 election interference case. His filings on Monday are Trump’s opening salvo of legal arguments to challenge the state-level charges. The filings indicate Trump wants to adopt the legal arguments his racketeering co-defendants Rudy Giuliani, Kenneth Chesebro and Ray Smith have already made in court filings.Giuliani filed his challenge Friday, asking Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee to toss his indictment due to “deficiencies,” his lawyers argued, that render it invalid. Chesebro, the pro-Trump lawyer who devised the “fake electors” scheme, filed a similar challenge last month that argued the indictment “fails to sufficiently set out the charge or any violation of the law.”Smith, an attorney for Trump’s 2020 campaign in Georgia, filed his extensive motion challenging the indictment also on Monday, arguing that the indictment had “volu...

House GOP push to impeach Biden runs into Senate GOP

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:02:53 GMT

By Annie Grayer, Manu Raju and Melanie Zanona | CNNHouse Republicans are not only facing resistance from within their own ranks to impeach President Joe Biden, they’re also getting a cool reception from another key constituency: Senate Republicans. The concerns raised from lawmakers across the Capitol – who would be the jury in an impeachment trial if it came to that – adds another layer of GOP opposition, and further exposes that Republicans are not unified in their pursuit of impeaching Biden.Republicans in the Senate are nervous that the push to impeach could backfire politically and give Biden a boost – all the while distracting from their efforts to paint the president as out of touch on the economy. Moreover, a number of Senate Republicans liken the Biden impeachment efforts to the two impeachments of then-President Donald Trump that they sharply criticized, even though the situations are markedly different. And some are deeply skeptical that House Republicans have gathered enou...

OAKLAND — The Roots SC, a popular men’s minor-league soccer franchise, wants to return to Oakland, the city that is represented in the team’s name and logos but not where it currently plays soccer games. On Tuesday, city officials will begin reviewing the terms of an agreement that would allow the Roots to build a temporary 10,000-seat stadium on the largely unused Malibu parking lot, a triangular space directly adjacent to the giant Coliseum complex in deep East Oakland. After forming in the late 2010s, the Roots emerged as a prominent community attraction, and until recently played its games at Oakland’s Laney College, south of Lake Merritt. But earlier this year, the franchise skipped town to a stadium at Cal State East Bay, citing a last-minute snafu involving the turf at the Laney field. It now plans to remain a half-hour drive south in Hayward for the entire 2024 season. In the meantime, the team hopes to work through negotiations with the city, plus the lo...
